ARECA

Avenue Road Eglinton Community Association (ARECA) works on issues of concern to residents including traffic and parking, police liaison, development, Eglinton Park, the North Toronto Memorial Community Centre and other neighbourhood issues. The board of ARECA is made up of 12 volunteers.

ARECA is pleased to announce that we now have a website www.areca.info.

In June there are several community events of note.

Eglinton Way's Annual Spring Festival is being held on Saturday June 12th from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m, from Oriole Parkway to Chaplin Crescent.  ARECA will be participating. We hope residents will drop by our table.

Environment Days are underway!
Get ready to clean out your basement, closets and garage of all the items you no longer use. Sporting goods, clothing, books, small household appliances and computer equipment) as well as of hazardous waste items - they can all be brought to an Environment Day near you.

The City of Toronto will recycle, divert and even donate these items! You can also pick-up water-saving kits, composters, recycling boxes, yard waste containers and leaf compost.

NOTE:  Councillor Stintz's "Environment Day" on Saturday June 19th has had to move from the published location of the North Toronto Arena Parking Lot to the Green Parking lot on Yonge Street near the Jolly Miller due to maximum soccer activity in Eglinton Park that day.

Andrew Bodrug from Councillor Stintz's office attended our May Board meeting and reported back to us on several issues.

Orchard View and Duplex

As reported last month the plan to demolish the five derelict houses on Orchard View at Duplex and erect a temporary parking lot has hit a snag. ARECA is extremely concerned over the potential for disaster if the homes remain in the current state. Andrew Bodrug confirmed that it is City policy not to tear down housing or potential housing to build parking lots. ARECA is trying to set up a meeting with the Planner who has been assigned to this property. A couple of options are on the table for discussion and we expect some developments over the summer.

Marshall McLuhan Catholic High School
Areca met with staff advisors and members of the student council in an attempt to resolve some issues concerning the school pupils and the neighbouring community.

The Board of ARECA wish to offer Officer Denis Dupuis of 53 Division best wishes on his upcoming retirement.  Officer Dupuis was a very popular presenter at our AGM's over the years and passed on many excellent security tips and information to our members.
