Avenue Road Eglinton
Community Association (ARECA) works on issues of concern to residents including
traffic and parking, police liaison, development, Eglinton Park, the North
Toronto Memorial Community Centre and other neighbourhood issues. The board of
ARECA is made up of 12 volunteers.
Councillor Karen Stintz
attended our April Board Meeting and provided updates on various issues that
ARECA is involved in:
A public meeting organized
by Councillor Karen Stintz was held on April 26 at the Public Library on
Orchard View Boulevard to review and discuss the plans to enclose part of the
open square at the northwest corner at Yonge and Eglinton. The owner and
developer David Green from Greenwin Properties presented the plans. The
community was split over the proposal. Some saw this as an opportunity to
create useable space in an area that is little used whereas others were
concerned over the loss of open space.
ARECA believes that any
development at the Yonge Eglinton intersection should be deferred until the
results of the Focused Review for the Yonge Eglinton Node are published and
incorporated into a Secondary Plan for Yonge and Eglinton. ARECA’s concern is
that Yonge and Eglinton should be treated as a “centre” instead of each
quadrant being planned for development in isolation. Councillor Stintz is
committed to represent the public interest and heard on Monday evening what the
community feels about the proposal.
The plan
to demolish the five derelict houses on Orchard View at Duplex and erect a
temporary parking lot has hit a snag. The City Planner will not allow a
demolition permit to be issued. The City cannot force the owner to fix up the
houses and the owner cannot demolish the buildings until a building application
is submitted. ARECA is extremely concerned over the potential for disaster if
the homes remain in the current state. Finding an interim solution to this
corner is a priority to Councillor Stintz.
Following a suggestion by
ARECA, Councillor Karen Stintz is now available to meet with constituents at
the North Toronto Community Centre on Friday mornings from 9 am – noon.
We have asked our ARECA rep
on the police committee to raise the issue of cars racing and speeding on
Elwood Boulevard and Oriole Parkway around Marshall McLuhan Catholic High
School. The speeding generally occurs at lunch time and at the end of school
from 2:30 – 3 pm. Pupils from the school are involved. ARECA has also raised
the issue with the school Principal.
