traffic and parking, police liaison, development, Eglinton Park, the North
Toronto Memorial Community Centre and other neighbourhood issues. The board of
ARECA is made up of 12 volunteers.
Development
Crystal Palace
ARECA is involved in the consultation process concerning the proposed development of the North/West corner of Yonge and Eglinton. Councillor Stintz has arranged a community meeting for Wednesday March 31 at the North Toronto Memorial Community Centre at 7 pm. David Green, Greenwin Properties and colleagues will be in attendance to answer any questions. ARECA has notified its members by email of the meeting.
The owner of the properties
has filed for a Temporary Control By-Law and a Demolition Permit for a parking
lot to replace the existing derelict buildings. Councillor Stintz’s staff is
working with City staff to obtain the necessary approvals in a more timely
fashion than the normal 6-month process.
ARECA has applied to have a
representative on the 53 Division Community Police Liaison Committee. Each
police division has a CPLC that acts as a liaison between the police and
various community groups. An initiative being undertaken by 53 Division is that
when officers from the Primary Response Unit are not answering calls they are
to drive to designated areas in 53 Division. This initiative has already
resulted in a reduction in crime in certain targeted hot spots. ARECA has
reported its concerns over the drug and alcohol use in Eglinton Park, the
trespassing and drug use in the derelict houses on the North/East corner of
Duplex and Orchard View and the theft of cars and break and enters. The latter,
we are advised, are the main crimes in 53 Division.
BY-Law Officers have been
making enquiries into complaints concerning the operation of Massage Parlours
on Eglinton Avenue West. To date four separate charges have been laid against
one owner. Complaints have also been received concerning five other properties
on Eglinton Avenue West. The respective files have been sent to the City of
Toronto’s South District office for inspection.
